“Developing Our Community Together”
Open Day - 15th August 2015 - Sponsored by Tudor Trust
Our annual open day was once again a great success and well attended by the local community.
Our star attraction was Irondan who delighted children and adults alike with his superb Iron Man costume! Daniel Hornsey made the suit himself and gives his time making appearances at parties and events in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Our thanks go to Daniel for coming to our event.
For the second year running we held our ‘Great CoStar Cake Off’ where we invite aspiring bakers to put their talents to the test. The judges really enjoyed sampling all the various cakes and the winners were as follows: Irene Davies – Showstopper, Jane Dorset – Welsh Cakes and Lynne Howles – Cup Cakes. Our thanks go to everyone who entered.
Not to be outdone by the bakers, our Crafty Chatters group also held their own competition which was a new addition this year. The winner of the ‘Craft Off’ was Diane with her glittery owl. The Crafty Chatters, who meet every Wednesday afternoon, also sold some of the craft items they have been making under the guidance of tutor Joanne Buckland.
In pride of place outside was the HMS CoStar, the raft which has been painstaking made by CoStar staff and volunteers. Another first for CoStar, this year we are entering the Monmouth Raft Race which is in aid of the St David’s Hospice. The raft is being water tested next week and we hope it floats! The wood for the raft was kindly donated by Davis Timber and our thanks go to them and to everyone who has helped build it.
Our kitchen staff were on hand to keep everyone supplied with cups of tea and bacon butties. We said a fond farewell to one of our dedicated volunteers Kathy, who is leaving us this week to set up her own café in the locality. We wish Kathy every success in her new endeavour.
Other stalls included massage tasters, art demonstrations, fancy goods, home made cakes, fun and games and not forgetting our famous smoothie bike where you can make a delicious smoothie by pedalling away!
Our thanks go once again to Tudor Trust who sponsored the day for us again this year and to everyone who worked hard to make it a success.
If you were not fortunate enough to pop in on Open Day there is still the chance to view the art and craft produced by our talented community. It is on display in the hall and well worth seeing. Call in on Tuesday morning for breakfast between 11.30 am and 12.45 am or for Lunch on Wednesday at 12.30 pm.
